New Oak Ranch Lavender FieldWelcome to Bill and Karen Evenden's New Oak Ranch, a family farm committed to growing quality lavender, Ojai Pixie Tangerines, olives and walnuts.

Located in rural southern California, less than 20 miles from the Pacific, the setting is definitely Mediterranean … spectacular mountains, brilliant sunshine, clear blue skies and generous soil. Surrounded by national forest and large ranches, our 24 acres provide perfect pastoral serenity.

Using ecologically responsible farming methods, we cultivate all of our crops with the consumer in mind. We believe that we are merely short-term caretakers of the land and respect the soil, air and water upon which we, and future generations, depend.

In 2004 and 2005 we planted about 5000 lavender plants. At that time our research indicated that we could expect about 9 to 12 years of production from our plants. However, our research also told us that lavender needs well-drained soil and that our heavy clay soil might not provide ideal growing conditions. For those of you who have visited the Ranch, you know that we have constantly been battling root rot and fungus, replacing up to 10% of our plants each year.

This year things are worse, many plants are unhappy and we realized that something on a much larger basis needed to be done. After much analysis and seemingly constant discussion, we have decided that the most efficient and satisfactory way to address our problem was to re-work the entire field. We have already started that process. Consequently the lavender fields will produce no lavender this year and New Oak Ranch will be closed to all visitors throughout 2013.
